Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition that affects an estimated 8 percent of the population, and between 11 and 20 percent of veterans from Iraq and Afganistan. PTSD presents symptoms more severe than we find with the typical stressors in our lives, like intrusive thoughts, disturbing flashbacks, and an increased risk for other mental health disorders. PTSD is more common in those who have faced combat situations, but can occur with trauma resulting from other serious life events as well, which is one of the reasons it is important to be aware of the symptoms and seek information and treatment if necessary.
