Degrees:
Typically, they are medical doctors with M.D.s. with education in biology and assessment and treatment of the full range of diagnostic disorders.
Experience :
After receiving their medical degree, they typically undergo four years of residency in psychiatry.
What They Can Provide:
They can provide therapeutic interventions that incorporate both talk therapy and the prescription of medications.
What They Can’t Provide :
They tend to work more with individuals than with groups, as they focus on psychiatric dysfunction rather than group dynamic dysfunction, so if you’re experiencing marital, couple, family or group difficulties, a family therapist or licensed clinical social worker may be a better choice.
How They Compare To Other Professionals:
In addition to what’s stated above, if you’re seeking help for extreme stress that can be relieved by lifestyle changes, one of these therapists or a life coach would be a better choice. They are also generally more expensive than other therapists, so if a less expensive therapist would suit your needs, you may choose that route based on finances.
