Degrees:
They have doctorates in psychology, education, or related fields.
Experience :
Although requirements vary from state to state, generally they are required to complete at least two years or 2000 hours of client work in addition to their doctorates to become licensed, so they have this experience plus whatever experience theyve gained since licensure.
What They Can Provide:
They can diagnose and treat the full spectrum of psychological disorders.
What They Cant Provide:
They cannot prescribe medication.
How They Compare To Other Professionals:
They are very well qualified to handle serious psychological issues and disorders that do not require medication, and are generally less expensive than psychiatrists, who do prescribe drugs. They do tend to be more expensive than masters-level therapists, so if money is an issue and a less-expensive therapist could also provide adequate help, that may factor into your decision. Similarly, if youre seeking help for extreme stress that can be relieved by lifestyle changes, one of these therapists or a life coach would be a better choice.
