Definition: These therapists have an M.A or an M.S. in in counseling or social work, and licensure or professional supervision to provide therapy that takes into account an individual’s place in their family structure and relationships, both past and present, as well as age, cultural background, and other social and identity considerations. They apply techniques that focus on personal development, communication skills and relationship issues. They can provide individual, group, couple or marital counseling and psychotherapy, and are able to diagnose and treat mental and emotional conditions and addictions. They cannot prescribe medications.
