Draw Something Relaxing! The App For Stress-Relieving Fun:

Isn't it great when something that's fun is also good for stress relief? I am a big fan of creative and fun stress relievers, as well as iPhone apps that relieve stress because stress relievers that people actually look forward to practicing may get more mileage from stressed and busy people than activities that require a little more effort, like going to the gym (though exercise is a fantastic stress reliever if you can force yourself to maintain it)!

My latest favorite "fun" stress reliever is the wildly popular app Draw Something. It has a free version and an incredibly worth-it $0.99 version, and they both allow you to express your creativity and sharpen your thinking skills with the help of your friends (or friendly strangers if your friends aren't already playing).

The point of the game is to draw a picture of a given word, and have your partner guess what it is; then they draw one for you and it's your turn to discern the content. You are both awarded coins when one of you guesses correctly, and there are a few different ways you can play:

  • Speed: Because the app records how much time it takes for drawing and guessing, you can see how quickly you can draw and guess the answers. This puts a bit of a competitive edge to the game. This leaves a game that is still cooperative and fun in nature, but for those who like a challenge, this provides one.

  • Artistry: For people (like me) who love to draw but never find themselves taking the time to do so, the selection of potential colors and line thicknesses creates an opportunity to have fun just drawing. If your partners don't mind waiting for you to add some detail to your creations, it's a great way to relax and have fun. (And if they do mind, you can provide a rough sketch so they can guess the answer early on, and then add details for your own enjoyment. The round ends for them when they guess, so this way, you both win!)

  • Get Creative!: If you're really looking for a challenge, you can draw "inside jokes" as clues for your friends, or draw pictures that sound like the words you're drawing, or find other creative ways to make the game your own.

One thing I love about this game is that it can provide a few-minute break when you're working on something stressful at your job, or a fun diversion when you have a few minutes to spare. It can keep your mind off of what's stressing you, so it can be a nice antidote to mild rumination or anxiety about the future, and can be a fun way to connect with friends at the same time. (Yay, social support!)

This app is my new favorite diversion for a reason. If you're looking for something fun to take a break, give yourself a little treat, or get your mind off of what's stressing you, I recommend that you give it a try!
