Cheap Summer Fun: Double The Stress Relief!

By May 21, 2009

Follow me on:

With Memorial Day coming up, many of us are making our plans for the summer. And, according to a new survey, 70% of Americans aren't going anywhere! Kelton Research, commissioned by Dave and Buster's, surveyed 1000 people nationwide and asked about their attitudes, plans and behaviors relating to fun. (Full disclosure: I've worked with Dave and Buster's professionally.) In addition to the information on vacations, they found that nearly 4 in 5 aren't having as much fun in their daily lives as they'd like, and 1 in 4 aren't having as much fun these days as they were having just a year ago.

Now, I'm not concerned about the idea of people staying home and not taking vacations this summer--I've been an advocate of staycations in the past, and I'm a firm believer that you don't have to spend a lot of money or go far away to have fun and get a break from work. However, I am concerned about people not having enough fun. Life need not be one non-stop party, but we need a balance of work and play in our lives, or we become overly stressed, find our relationships strained, and face a higher risk of burnout.

If you aren't taking a vacation this summer, I suggest you take a staycation AND a 'playcation'! (Heck, you could take several staycations and playcations throughout the year if you wanted to!) I'm a fan of staycations and playcations because they are a less-expensive option for having some real fun and relaxation--the money you save and the fun you have can provide a double-dose of stress relief! To learn more about staycations, playcations and strategies for less-stressed travel (if you're planning on going the traditional vacation route), see the resources below.
