How to Stay Healthy with Stress Management

Tuesday October 7, 2008
Feel like you're surrounded with sick people? With school in full swing again, many people are noticing a spike in colds and flu, even though the weather is warm. This is understandable, considering that kids have spent the summer playing and picking up new germs, and now is the time that they swap these lovely microorganisms, thus sharing sharing them with their parents, who then knowingly or unknowingly bring them to work for more sharing and swapping. While this isn't full-blown flu season, you may notice a little spike in "things going around".

This is pretty much unavoidable (there is no way to casually duck under your desk before a colleague sneezes, at least not without looking like a germaphobe), but there are things you can do to keep yourself healthier. You already know the obvious--eat healthy meals, get plenty of sleep and avoid touching your face after someone sneezes on your hands, but you can also keep yourself healthier by focusing on stress management.

This article on stress and wellness explains the role stress plays in your overall health, and provides solutions on staying healthy.

Do you think that stress is making you sick, either with a common cold or something more serious? Do you have tips on staying healthy with stress relief? You can discuss it in the Stress Management Forum.

Elizabeth:

I hate to dissent, but in the referring “stress and wellness” article link provided in this post, it recommends vitamin C to boost your immune system. The truth is, this is not much more than a wives’ tale. There is no appreciable science connecting extra vitamin C with cold/flu prevention or reduction in duration or severity.

More on this is at the blog http://www.balancedimmunehealth.com

Immune balance is the key. This is the approach of “syncing” your immune system not to overreact when a pathogen threat is basically harmless, and to react aggressively when early bacterial or viral presence demands it. This has many ramifications not just for colds and flu, but also for allergies and other inflammatory conditions, many of which fall under the aegis of “stress-related illness.”

Thanks for the chance to offer this up on your blog, which is a great blog.
